Troubleshooting
First: Sign In and Update
Many issues happen because users skip signing in or updating.
Before troubleshooting:
- Sign in to the PeekSmith app with your Apple ID (iOS) or Google account (Android). Most features and updates won’t work without signing in.
- Update the app when prompted.
- Connect to your Quantum and update the firmware.
⚠️ CRITICAL: If you’re on firmware older than v1.0.7, update immediately. Earlier versions had a critical bug that could cause the device to get stuck on “boot” and become unresponsive.
Why this matters: Features you’re looking for might only be available in newer versions. We regularly add improvements and fixes.
Finding version numbers:
- Firmware version: Check in PeekSmith app → Settings → Quantum → Details.
- App version: Found on the Home page of the app.
Can’t Connect to Quantum
If your Quantum isn’t showing up or won’t connect:
Check the Basics
- Is Quantum turned on? Press ON/AC button. Screen should display something (not blank).
- Is Bluetooth enabled on your phone?
- Is Quantum already connected to another app? It can only connect to one app at a time. Close other apps.
- Is the battery charged? Low battery is the most common connection issue. Look for “CRT” on charger.
iOS Issues
- Allow Bluetooth access: Go to Settings → PeekSmith → Enable Bluetooth.
- Try restarting your phone if Quantum still doesn’t appear.
Android Issues
- Enable GPS/Location: Android requires location services for Bluetooth to work. Go to Settings → Location → Turn on.
- Allow location access: Go to Settings → PeekSmith → Permissions → Enable Location.
- Try flight mode: Turn on flight mode for 5 seconds, then turn it off. This can reset Bluetooth.
- Restart your phone: Android Bluetooth can be buggy. A restart often fixes connection issues.
Video guide: See how to enable location permission.
Too Many Bluetooth Devices
Phones can typically connect to 10-16 devices at once. If you have many devices connected (earphones, fitness bands, etc.), disconnect unused Bluetooth devices.
Don’t Pair from Bluetooth Settings
Let the PeekSmith app handle the connection. Don’t manually pair from phone Settings → Bluetooth.
Quantum Connects Then Immediately Disconnects
This usually indicates a pairing conflict:
Solution: Forget and Re-pair
For Android:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth (or Connected devices)
- Find Quantum in the paired devices list
- Tap the device, then tap “Forget” or “Unpair”
- Restart your phone
- Open PeekSmith app and connect again
- Accept the pairing request when it appears
For iOS:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth
- Find Quantum in the device list
- Tap the (i) icon next to it
- Tap “Forget This Device” and confirm
- Restart your phone
- Open PeekSmith app and connect again
- Accept the pairing request when it appears
Multiple Device Connections
Important: Quantum can connect to multiple apps/devices but can only be paired to one device at a time.
If you want to switch between devices:
- Forget/unpair from the first device (see instructions above)
- Pair with the new device
- Each time you switch, you’ll need to repeat this process
Connection Works but App Doesn’t Respond
If Quantum appears connected but doesn’t respond to app commands:
- Restart the App - Close completely (force quit) and reopen
- Check Firmware - Update to latest firmware via PeekSmith app
- Check Battery - Low battery can cause communication issues
- Reset Connection - Disconnect and reconnect in the app
Charging Issues
Not Charging / No “CRT” Indicator
If Quantum won’t charge or doesn’t show the “CRT” indicator:
-
Check Alignment
- The charging area is near the hologram sticker on the back, bottom area
- Try moving Quantum slightly on the charger
- The “CRT” indicator appears only when properly aligned
-
Try Different Power Source
- Use a different USB power adapter
- Try a different USB cable
- Plug into a wall outlet instead of computer USB
-
Clean Charging Surfaces
- Wipe the back of Quantum with a soft cloth
- Clean the wireless charger surface
- Remove any cases or stickers from the back
-
Check Charger LED
- Most Qi chargers have an LED indicator
- If the charger LED doesn’t light up, the charger may be faulty
-
Test with Different Qi Charger
- Any standard Qi wireless charger should work
- Try charging your phone on the same charger to test if it works
Charges Slowly or Inconsistently
- Ensure Proper Alignment - Move Quantum around until “CRT” appears
- Remove Interference - Take off any metal objects or phone cases nearby
- Use Quality Charger - Some cheap Qi chargers provide inconsistent power
Battery Charging Behavior
Important charging thresholds:
-
Quantum will NOT charge if battery is below ~10% - If fully discharged, it may not charge immediately. Leave it on the charger for 10-15 minutes, and it should start charging once the battery reaches the minimum threshold.
-
Quantum stops charging at ~90-95% - This is intentional to preserve battery health. The battery indicator may show less than 100%, but this is normal and helps extend battery lifespan.
-
After performance: Always charge Quantum after every use to prevent deep discharge, which can damage LiPo batteries.
Display Issues
Screen is Blank or Dim
-
Check if Quantum is On
- Press ON/AC button
- If screen stays blank, charge the battery
-
Check if in Idle Mode
- Press ON/AC button once to wake from Idle
- Screen should brighten
-
Fully Discharged Battery
- If battery is completely dead, it may take 10-15 minutes of charging before powering on
- Leave on charger for 30 minutes, then try ON/AC button
Screen Shows Strange Characters
- Firmware Glitch - Turn off completely (hold ON/AC + press =), then turn back on
- Update Firmware - Check for firmware updates in PeekSmith app
- Factory Reset - Contact support if issue persists
“ANS” Message Appears on Startup
If you see “ANS” displayed when you turn on Quantum, this is normal calculator behavior.
What it means:
- “ANS” stands for “Answer” - the last calculated result
- This is a standard feature on scientific calculators
- It appears when Quantum remembers the previous calculation result
How to clear it:
- Press ON/AC button to clear and start fresh
- Or simply start entering a new calculation
This is not an error - it’s just showing that the previous answer is stored in memory and can be reused in calculations.
Firmware Update Issues
Stuck on “Boot” Screen After Update
If Quantum gets stuck showing “boot” after a firmware update:
- Wait 2-3 minutes - Sometimes it takes longer than expected
- Try power cycling - Hold ON/AC + press = to force shutdown, then turn back on
- Contact support - If still stuck, contact Electricks Support
Important: Firmware v1.0.7+ fixed a critical bug that caused devices to get stuck on “boot”. If you’re on an older version, update to v1.0.7 or later as soon as possible.
Update Failing to Complete
If firmware updates keep failing:
- Unpair Quantum first - If previously used as Bluetooth keyboard, unpair from phone Bluetooth settings
- Charge the battery - Low battery causes update failures
- Close other apps - Make sure no other apps are connected to Quantum
- Restart both devices - Restart phone and power cycle Quantum
- Try desktop update - Use MagiScript Editor instead of mobile app
See Firmware Upgrade Guide for detailed instructions.
Keyboard/Pairing Issues
Bluetooth Keyboard Pairing Fails
When using Quantum as a Bluetooth keyboard (Q-Type mini-app):
-
Accept Pairing Request
- When pairing dialog appears, you MUST select “Connect”
- Canceling the pairing will prevent keyboard functionality
-
Re-pair if Previously Cancelled
- If you cancelled pairing before, forget the device from Bluetooth settings
- Try connecting again and accept the pairing this time
-
Can Only Pair with One Device
- If paired with Windows, you must forget it before pairing with iPhone
- Each operating system requires separate pairing
-
Keyboard Only Works in Mini-Apps
- Bluetooth keyboard mode only works when running keyboard mini-apps (like Q-Type)
- It won’t work when just using the calculator normally
Understanding Pairing vs Connecting:
- Connecting = Quantum talking to the PeekSmith app (happens through the app)
- Pairing = Your phone’s operating system recognizing Quantum as a keyboard (happens in phone settings)
When using Quantum as a keyboard, you need BOTH to be working properly.
For more details, see Bluetooth Keyboard.
Performance Issues
Quantum is Slow or Unresponsive
- Low Battery - Charge the device
- Restart Quantum - Full power off (hold ON/AC + press =), then power back on
- Update Firmware - Check for updates in PeekSmith app
- Close Other Apps - Make sure only one app is connected at a time
Mini-Apps Won’t Launch
- Update Firmware - Some mini-apps require specific firmware versions
- Reinstall Mini-App - Delete and reinstall via MagiScript editor
- Check Compatibility - Ensure mini-app is compatible with your firmware version
Q-Force Not Working
If number forcing isn’t working:
- Check force is enabled - Open PeekSmith app → Quantum Settings
- Verify force number is set - Should not be
0unless you want no force - Check range conditions - Result must fall within min/max range if set
- Try temporary force - Enter number, long-press
)to test on-the-fly
See Q-Force documentation for detailed instructions.
App Not Working Properly
If the PeekSmith app crashes or behaves strangely:
- Update the app: Check your app store for the latest version.
- Update firmware: Make sure Quantum has the latest firmware.
- Restart the app: Close it completely and reopen.
- Reinstall the app: Delete and reinstall can fix corrupted data.
Migrating to a New Phone
If you moved the app from an old phone to a new one (using phone transfer/migration tools), the app may not work correctly.
Solution: Delete the app and reinstall it fresh from the app store. Don’t restore it from a backup.
