Troubleshooting
First: Update Your Firmware
Many issues happen because users are running outdated firmware.
Before troubleshooting:
- Connect Atom to the PeekSmith app.
- Update the firmware to the latest version.
- Update the PeekSmith app if prompted.
Why this matters: Features youโre looking for might only be available in newer versions. We regularly add improvements and fixes.
Finding version numbers:
- Firmware version: Found in PeekSmith app โ Settings โ Atom โ Details.
- App version: Found on the Home page of the PeekSmith app.
Atom Wonโt Turn On
If Atom doesnโt turn on when you press the power button:
Check the Basics
- Is the battery charged? If LED blinks yellow 3 times, battery is too low. Charge for at least 1 hour.
- Is it disconnected from charger? Atom cannot turn on while charging. Unplug it first.
- Are you holding long enough? Press and hold power button until you feel a vibration.
LED Indicators
- Yellow blinking (3 times): Battery critically low. Charge immediately.
- Cyan LED (5 seconds): Normal startup, Launch Mode active.
- No LED at all: Battery completely drained or device needs repair.
Charging Issues
If Atom wonโt charge:
- Try a different cable โ The USB-C cable might be damaged.
- Try a different charger โ Use a simple wall charger or computer USB port.
Common problem: Some โsmartโ fast chargers donโt work with Atom.
Why this happens: Fast chargers designed for phones may not detect Atomโs low power draw and wonโt start charging.
Solution: Use a basic USB charger (like older phone chargers) or plug into a computer USB port.
Charging LED indicators:
- Yellow pulsing: Battery drained, charging started
- Red pulsing: Low battery, charging
- Green solid: Fully charged (~1 hour charge time)
Note: You can safely use any 5V charger. High-wattage chargers (100W+) wonโt damage Atom.
Canโt Connect to Atom
If Atom isnโt showing up or wonโt connect to your phone:
Check the Basics
- Is Atom turned on? You should see the cyan LED in Launch Mode.
- Is Bluetooth enabled on your phone?
- Is Atom already connected to another app? Close other magic apps and try again.
- Is the battery charged? Low battery prevents Bluetooth connections.
iOS Issues
- Allow Bluetooth access: Go to Settings โ PeekSmith โ Enable Bluetooth.
- Try restarting your phone if Atom still doesnโt appear.
Android Issues
- Enable GPS/Location: Android requires location services for Bluetooth to work. Go to Settings โ Location โ Turn on.
- Allow location access: Go to Settings โ PeekSmith โ Permissions โ Enable Location.
- Try flight mode: Turn on flight mode for 5 seconds, then turn it off. This can reset Bluetooth.
- Restart your phone: Android Bluetooth can be buggy. A restart often fixes connection issues.
Video guide: See how to enable location permission.
Too Many Devices Connected
Phones can connect to 10-16 Bluetooth devices at once. If you have many devices connected (earphones, fitness band, car, etc.), try disconnecting some to free up space.
Donโt Connect from Bluetooth Settings
The app will handle the connection for you. You donโt need to pair from your phoneโs Bluetooth settings.
Atom Connects Then Immediately Disconnects
This usually indicates a pairing conflict:
Solution: Forget and Re-pair
For Android:
- Open Settings โ Bluetooth (or Connected devices)
- Find Atom in the paired devices list
- Tap the device, then tap โForgetโ or โUnpairโ
- Restart your phone
- Open PeekSmith app and connect again
- Accept the pairing request when it appears
For iOS:
- Open Settings โ Bluetooth
- Find Atom in the device list
- Tap the (i) icon next to it
- Tap โForget This Deviceโ and confirm
- Restart your phone
- Open PeekSmith app and connect again
- Accept the pairing request when it appears
Why this happens: Atom can connect to multiple apps/devices but can only be paired to one device at a time. If you switch between phones or apps, you need to re-pair.
Atom Wonโt Connect to Other Devices (PeekSmith, SB Watch, etc.)
If Atom wonโt connect to PeekSmith, SB Watch, Quantum, or other Bluetooth devices:
Check the Basics
- Is the other device turned on and charged?
- Is the other device connected to another app? Close apps on your phone temporarily.
- Move away from your phone: Temporarily disable Bluetooth on your phone or move away to prevent automatic connections.
Check Device IDs in Settings
Atomโs device ID settings control what it connects to:
- Open PeekSmith app โ Settings โ Atom โ Details
- Check Device IDs for PeekSmith, SB Watch, etc.
- Default setting:
*(asterisk) means Atom connects to first available device
Common issues:
- Set to wrong name: If changed from
*, it must match exactly (case-sensitive, no typos) - Connecting to wrong device: If you have multiple PeekSmiths,
*connects to first one found - Typo in name: One wrong character prevents connection
Solutions:
- For troubleshooting: Set back to
*to test - For specific device: Enter exact name (e.g.,
PeekSmith-031234) - Check capitalization:
peeksmith-031234wonโt work, must bePeekSmith-031234
Finding device names:
- PeekSmith: Shows on home screen when turned on
- SB Watch: Check in watch settings
- Quantum: Check in PeekSmith app device list
Advanced Debugging
Connect Atom to the MagiScript Editor and monitor the logs when a mini-app tries to connect. This shows connection attempts and error messages.
Mini-Apps Not Working
If mini-apps wonโt launch or behave incorrectly:
Check Launch Mode
- Turn on Atom โ Cyan LED should appear for 5 seconds
- Press button #1-#11 during the 5-second window
- Wait for feedback โ LED color change or vibration confirms launch
Canโt launch mini-app?
- Battery might be too low
- Firmware might be outdated
- Mini-app might need to be reinstalled
Return to Launch Mode Anytime
Double-click the power button to exit current mini-app and return to Launch Mode (cyan LED, 5 seconds).
Set Auto-Launch Mini-App
To automatically start a mini-app when turning on Atom:
- Turn on Atom (cyan LED appears)
- Press and hold power button
- While holding, press the mini-app button you want (#1-#11)
- Release quickly (donโt hold too long or Atom will turn off)
Now that mini-app will launch automatically on startup.
To disable auto-launch: Repeat the process with a different button, or set it back to no mini-app.
Keyboard Mode Issues
When using Atom as a Bluetooth keyboard:
Pairing Required
Operating systems (iOS, Android, Windows, Mac) require pairing when Atom acts as a keyboard.
Accept the pairing dialog when it appears โ canceling prevents keyboard functionality.
Can Only Pair with One Device
If paired with Windows, you must forget it before pairing with iPhone. Each device requires separate pairing.
Virtual Keyboard on iOS
When Atom is paired as a keyboard, iOS hides the on-screen keyboard.
Solution: Tap Atomโs power button to toggle the virtual keyboard back on.
Re-pairing After Firmware Update
After updating firmware, you may need to forget and re-pair Atom from your phoneโs Bluetooth settings.
App Not Working Properly
If the PeekSmith app crashes or behaves strangely:
- Update the app: Check your app store for the latest version.
- Update firmware: Make sure Atom has the latest firmware.
- Restart the app: Close it completely and reopen.
- Reinstall the app: Delete and reinstall can fix corrupted data.
Migrating to a New Phone
If you moved the app from an old phone to a new one (using phone transfer/migration tools), the app may not work correctly.
Solution: Delete the app and reinstall it fresh from the app store. Donโt restore it from a backup.
Battery Draining Quickly
Current firmware provides approximately 3 hours of continuous use.
Tips to extend battery:
- Turn Atom off between routines
- Use lower LED brightness in mini-apps (if configurable)
- Keep firmware updated (battery improvements planned)
Battery care:
- Charge before every performance
- Charge every 2-3 months even when not in use
- Donโt let battery drain completely (damages LiPo batteries)
